“Education is the backbone of sustainable development. Education stimulates and empowers people to participate in their own development” (Chowdhury et al, 1) Primary education must receive a great amount of attention in developing nations for this reason the expansion of quality primary education is crucial, just as it is in other developing nations within Africa and beyond. Disparities in the quality of education are by far the biggest problem Nigeria faces in the primary education sector. Most important is the stark contrast in the quality of education received in a government school as opposed to a private-run school. By addressing these problems Nigeria will be much more likely to succeed in providing its Population with high-quality, universal primary education. This will provide the basis for sustainable economic and social development in the nation.
Much has been written recently regarding the successes Nigeria has experienced in increasing access to primary education among disadvantaged groups such as boys and girls, those who live in rural areas, and the urban poor. While these achievements should not be underestimated, it is imperative to recognize that there are still many challenges that must be met in enhancing equity and access in the primary education sector
